If you're thinking about moving to the Hartford area and want a place that’s great for families, you're in the right place. Whether you're drawn by schools, community feel, outdoor space, or a mix of all three, central Connecticut has no shortage of family-friendly towns.
As a local real estate agent—and a parent myself—I’ve helped many families relocate to Hartford County. Based on what I hear from clients (and what I’ve experienced raising my own kids), here are several towns worth exploring in 2025.

🏘️ Glastonbury
Why Families Love It:
A+ rated school system (Niche 2024: Glastonbury Public Schools rated A+ for academics, teachers, and college prep)
Abundance of parks, playgrounds, and hiking trails
Tons of seasonal events and activities, from orchard visits to summer concerts
Glastonbury offers a great mix of community and privacy. Many neighborhoods are quiet and tucked away, yet only 10–15 minutes from downtown Hartford. With wide sidewalks, strong extracurricular offerings, and a strong focus on academics and character, it’s consistently a top pick for families.
🏙️ West Hartford
Why Families Love It:
Walkable town centers (Blue Back Square and West Hartford Center)
Two highly rated public high schools: Hall and Conard (U.S. News & World Report 2024: Both ranked in the top 25 high schools in CT)
Vibrant community with events, parks, and indoor play spaces
West Hartford offers a bit more bustle and energy while still feeling family-oriented. You’ll find beautiful homes, lots of kids’ programming, and a strong sense of community involvement—plus easy access to downtown Hartford and major highways.
🌳 Wethersfield
Why Families Love It:
Classic New England charm with historic appeal
Good school system and lots of neighborhood pride (Niche 2024: Wethersfield Public Schools rated B+ overall)
Great balance of affordability and location
Wethersfield is a quieter option but still very connected. The town green, seasonal festivals, and Old Wethersfield all contribute to a family-friendly, community-focused vibe. And with housing that’s often more affordable than nearby towns, it’s a great value play.
🏡 Newington
Why Families Love It:
Strong schools and stable neighborhoods (Niche 2024: Newington Public Schools rated B+ overall, A- for diversity and clubs & activities)
Central location with easy access to Hartford, West Hartford, and the Berlin Turnpike
Tons of town parks, including Churchill and Mill Pond
Newington is a great option for families who want something practical, predictable, and well-located. It may not have the flash of West Hartford or the rural charm of Glastonbury, but it’s convenient, safe, and full of long-term residents.
🛤️ Other Towns to Explore:
Avon & Simsbury: Strong schools (Niche 2024: Both districts rated A+) and scenic landscapes
Farmington: Central, with great schools (Niche 2024: A for academics and college prep) and access to both Hartford and UConn Health
Rocky Hill & Berlin: More space, good parks, and a quieter lifestyle with reasonable commutes
What to Look For in a Family-Friendly Town
When working with clients, I often suggest focusing on:
School ratings and real parent reviews
Sidewalks, parks, and green space
Proximity to childcare, pediatricians, and rec programs
Commute time to work and key family members (yes, grandparents matter!)
